N. LUHMANN writes: "The difference between subject and object (thinking and being, knowledge and object) is nothing else but the distinction between self-reference and external reference"(1995, p. 8)
The autopoietic system connects itself with some external reference through structural coupling, i.e. "external" becomes "reference" only when the system reacts to some feature in its environment and, in some way, internalizes the "external".
