"The subsystem which forms stable associations that endure for significant periods among matter-energy inputs in the system or outputs from its converter" (J.G. MILLER, 1978, p.3).
This is one of the 20 critical subsystems in MILLER's taxonomy of living systems.
MILLER adds: "… the materials being synthetized being for growth, damage repair, or replacement of components of the system, or for providing energy for moving or constituting the system's outputs of products or information markers to its suprasystem" (Ibid).
Clearly, "producer" is a generic term covering many types of specific or specialized producers.
