The discovery or ordering of specific and repetitious interrelations between associated elements.
The discovery of any pattern implies that the associated elements are parts of a system.
G. BATESON writes: "… patterning or predictability of particular events within a larger aggregate of events is technically called 'redundancy'" (1973, p.382).
In fact, predictability results from the discovery of patterns. Patterning is also a tool for compression of data, leading to construction of algorithms (see: Algorithmic incompressibility). It seems to be a basic ability of the brain.
