According to ACKOFF: "… one who wants either to create an effective organization or to improve the operation of an existing one… has four basic types of approach to organizational effectiveness and combinations thereof. The basic types of approach correspond to the four essential characteristics of organizations." (see here upon: "Organization as a system")
B. BANATHY differentiates the characteristics of old style or new style organizations (see 1993, p.248).
Older organizations tend to dynamic stability obtained through hierarchical control, a generally closed logic and the search for efficiency focused on short-term goals.
Newer organizations admit shared power, cooperation, long-term perspectives and creativity.
It should be observed however that, as organizations of the second type (in business, politics, science, etc…) tend towards stabilization and maturity, they also derive towards the first type.
