About

The International Encyclopedia of Systems and Cybernetics was first edited and published by the system scientist Charles François in 1997. The online version that is provided here was based on the 2nd edition in 2004. It was uploaded and gifted to the center by ASC president Michael Lissack in 2019; the BCSSS purchased the rights for the re-publication of this volume in 200?. In 2018, the original editor expressed his wish to pass on the stewardship over the maintenance and further development of the encyclopedia to the Bertalanffy Center. In the future, the BCSSS seeks to further develop the encyclopedia by open collaboration within the systems sciences. Until the center has found and been able to implement an adequate technical solution for this, the static website is made accessible for the benefit of public scholarship and education.

MINATI writes: 'The notion of Dynamic Usage of Systems is related to the situations in which the system to be studied is so complex that it is not possible, in principle (because of its structural, unpredictable dynamics) fully describe it through a single model, nor through a sequence of models. each of which is a refinement of the previous one. In case of so complex systems (e.g. biological, social, cognitive systems) this approach makes reference to the ability to select, among the available ones, a number of different models of a given system, in order to simultaneously use them in a systemic way, i.e. the investigator, while being aware of the intrinsic limitations of each one of the models of the same system, makes, not withstanding, use of their results in a "crossed way", taking into account even the mistakes and not only avoiding them. The strategy is not to find the "right model, but to use the available ones (available knowledge) in an effective way"(2001 a, 2002b)

It is possibly more a matter of comparing relative inconsistencies than to speak of "mistakes". Models are constructed in some specific way and depend on viewpoints. They can be useful in a complementary way, even if not perfectly "correct"
