G. BATESON observes: "… that messages may be about (or 'meta' to) the relationship between messages of different levels" (1973, p.219).
2d order learning is based on processes of hierarchization of messages. A good example is Pavlovian conditioning, wherein the metamessage comes finally to act as trigger for the conditioned behavior.
Behavioral and mental algorithms act as contexts or metacontexts for the interpretation of messages.
