"A function which assigns to each object the appropriate label… from a set of labels (R.C. CONANT, 1974, p.9)
CONANT writes that each label: "… depends upon and carries information about the constellation of characteristics" and adds that: "To select the proper label the classificational hierarchy must be provided with log2N bits of information, on the average, about the characteristics of the objects (less if the labels are not equally probable)" (Ibid.).
