CONSTRUCTIONISM 1)
← Back
According to E.von GLASERSFELD, this term has been " invented by K. GERGEN to distinguish his way of thinking from that of other constructivists"(1999, p. 11)
According to GERGEN "The constructionist is centrally concerned with such matters as negotiation, cooperation, conflict, rethoric, ritual, roles, special scenarios, and the like, but avoids psychological explorations of microsocial process"(1995, p. 25)
Thus, constructionism seems more "conversational "(in PASK's way) than autopoietic (in von FOERSTER's and MATURANA's way) somewhat at variance with constructivism.
Anyhow, both concepts are closely related and, as in the case of the egg and hen, it is quite difficult to distinguish what came first.
Indeed, von GLASERSFELD concludes: "What speakers have learned to mean always remain their own construction"(p. 16)
(See the special issue of "Cybernetics and Human knowing" 6(1) 1999 on "Radical constructivism in education" for more on this subject.
